Capturing Love in Rotterdam: Destination Wedding Photography with Jukki & Robin
This was my fourth destination wedding photography assignment in Rotterdam, where Jukki & Robin were preparing to tie the knot. I had met them previously at the wedding of Vivian & Raymond, where Robin, at that time, served as one of Raymond’s groomsmen. It was with great pleasure that I accepted their invitation to capture their special day as their wedding photographer in Rotterdam. Thus, I commenced the day at NHow Hotel in Rotterdam to document the bride’s preparations for their Chinese traditional wedding ceremony, during which the couple adorned themselves in traditional Chinese attire.
Embracing Tradition: The Chinese Wedding Ceremony
The morning unfolded with a complete Chinese wedding procedure, including the groom’s entourage arriving to collect the bride amidst playful gate crashing games designed by the bridesmaids. It was delightful to capture the humorous moments as the groom and his groomsmen navigated these challenges. Following this, the couple participated in the Chinese traditional tea ceremony, a deeply emotional affair as they served tea to their parents and elders, marked by tears of joy and moments of laughter.
After the heartfelt tea ceremony, we proceeded to the iconic New York Hotel Rotterdam, where we seized the opportunity for a brief yet memorable group photo session, capturing the joyous atmosphere amidst the anticipation of the forthcoming moments. As the couple prepared for their attire change, the bride’s close friend, a talented makeup artist, meticulously styled her hair and makeup, ensuring she radiated beauty and elegance on her special day. Meanwhile, the groom, filled with eager anticipation, awaited his beloved, his heart pounding with excitement as he prepared to behold her in her stunning bridal attire for the very first time.
Making the Most of Every Moment: The First Look
Upon my arrival in the Netherlands, the rain persisted, casting a dampening effect even on the wedding day, posing challenges for wedding photography. However, I extend immense gratitude to the remarkable couple who placed their trust in me, as well as the exceptional local videography team. Despite the drizzle, they willingly ventured outdoors with us for a brief session.
Originally, we had planned for a first look in a charming alley overlooking the Erasmusbrug Bridge. However, the rain altered our plans, leading us to conduct the first look right outside the hotel, albeit with a backdrop marred by construction. Nonetheless, we improvised by incorporating rental bikes into the scene, adding a touch of romance against the urban backdrop. The result? Exquisite shots captured in this unique setting.
Capturing Love Amidst Rotterdam’s Charm
Following the first look, the couple arrived at The Zalmhuis (The Salmon House), situated on the banks of the Nieuwe Maas, east of the Van Brienenoord Bridge, and adjacent to the Rivium Business Park, where the civil ceremony and dinner reception took place. The civil ceremony unfolded at The Rooftop Room in Zalmhuis, adorned with simple decorations befitting its newly renovated ambiance, which already exuded a stunning aura perfect for the occasion. The ceremony was marked by poignant moments as dear friends shed tears of joy during Jukki & Robin’s vows exchange.
Post-ceremony, amidst wedding cake cutting and toasting, held at The Garden Room on the first floor of Zalmhuis, I seized the opportunity to capture portraits of the newlyweds by the riverside, while guests enjoyed themselves before reconvening for the wedding reception in The Rooftop Room. It’s been a privilege to photograph at Zalmhuis on several occasions, always a pleasure to return to this venue.
Dancing into Forever: The Spectacular Opening Dance
As the evening progressed, the bride and groom dazzled with a spectacular opening dance, igniting the festivities into a joyous celebration! To Jukki & Robin, may your journey together be filled with boundless love and happiness!
